The VCR arrived carefully packed in bubble wrap in a box that had not been dropped. I could hear pieces rattling loose in the box as I unpacked it. Once opened, I could see that the unit had been dropped on the left front corner before packing. I knew this because the packing was not damaged, and there was big dent and break on the left front corner. The front panel had been pushed to the right by the damage so that the dvd drawer could not open and VCR tapes could not go in. I opened the unit, poured out the broken pieces, and bent the metal frame back into its rectangular shape so that I could line up the front panel with the inner works. The unit worked, but looks pretty bad. I told Discount Jungle. They answered that there was nothing they could do. They suggested that I contact the manufacturer. If they got a broken unit from Sylvania, why did they ship it out? This is by far the worst experience and lack of service that I have had in buying though Amazon.

After reading the reviews and realizing that most of the positive ones were 5 years old (2004), I was really wondering if I had made a mistake. I had to go through several DVD's before I found the match. Calling the Sylvania 1 800 number on the top of the player/recorder gave me great customer service. The call was picked up quickly, I had the rep walk me through the error messages. All my of my DVD's resulted in error messages, so I was politely asked if I would be willing to be put on hold while the rep did some research. After a few minutes, he came back (thanks Jason) with a list of makes and types that would work. Looked for them on-line and found them right away. Delivered today and I've been recorded from the TV to vhs, from the TV to DVD, from DVD to VHS and from VHS back to DVD. I also recorded music Cd-r and video on a dvd-r on my laptop and they played beautifully. Quick setup because I had an old sylvnia VHS recorder and DVD player so the remote and the front panel are almost exactly the same. Just swapped out the old one and I was ready to go -- with the right DVD's. and here they are: Fujifilm DVD-R, 4X. Yes, you can get a lemon, but my DVR90VE came from Discounts Jungle, is refurbished and comes with a 90-day warranty so I recommend them as well. Hope this helps. Happy New Year!

The product looked pretty good except for the dings in them, and I what I mean buy them, is that, I got two of of them because Discount Jungle whom sent them to me was good about sending me another one after first one was damaged when I received it via "UPS". Then the second one I got was damaged worse than the fist one. I thought that "UPS" stood for United Parcel Service not "United Parcel Smashers". So, never got to use the product just returned them.

This was bought as a gift for my less than savy parents. With simple setup and dubbing for home movies, it works well, but watch the media you purchase. You have to get low speed discs, 1-2x only or discs that don't read "Up to 4x" or "1-16x". The player refuses to recognize these and it leads to some headaches. Overall, a good buy.
