Amazon.com Product Description
With its high-end component-video DVD outputs, VHS recording and playback abilities, built-in MP3 decoding, and compatibility with JPEG image CDs and Kodak Picture CDs, Samsung's DVD-V4600 DVD/VCR combo is a conveniently slim entertainment dynamo. Now you'll be able to enjoy a slideshow of your digital pictures right on your television. It will play video-mode DVD-R/RW and DVD+R/RW discs, too, making it a great gift for family members with whom you'd like to share your home videos on DVD. This model also includes front-panel audio/video inputs so you can quickly and easily hook up a camcorder or gaming console.

Whether your living room is currently home to an HDTV or you're merely thinking of "someday," the DVD-V4600 stands ready to deliver the full potential of your DVDs. Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, giving you higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts.

The VCR delivers hi-fi stereo sound and quasi-S-VHS (SQPB) playback, which lets you view S-VHS cassettes--normally only playable on high-end S-VHS machines--in standard VHS resolution. The unit's 4-head design ensures smooth slow-motion play (forward and reverse) and clear still-frame images. Use the VCR's advance-record settings to make sure you never miss a favorite show or pertinent one-time broadcast.

Top-of-the-line component-video outputs (for DVD only) help minimize digital and line-scan artifacts on compatible advanced televisions, while composite- and S-video outputs bring DVD compatibility with nearly any television. The VCR output is composite-video and RF only. A set of left/right analog-audio outputs for both DVD and VCR components channel audio to Dolby Pro Logic receivers and stereo televisions. Both Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1-channel surround-sound DVD signals can be routed through the player's digital-audio outputs (one each optical and coaxial) for direct connection to a full-featured audio/video receiver.

Another handy feature is EZ View letterbox eliminator, which lets you enjoy full-screen pictures on 4:3 aspect-ratio TVs--even when you're watching widescreen DVDs.

What's in the Box
DVD/VCR combo unit, IR remote control, 2 AA batteries, user's manual, stereo analog audio interconnect/composite-video cable, and warranty information.

2 out of 5 stars Piece of junk!   June 29, 2010
Cliff
I've had this Samsung VCR/DVD combo since about 2006. In about 1 year after owning the device I noticed that several DVDs couldn't be played on the machine. These were the newer DVDs that I ordered from Netflix. However these could be played on a DVD player that was nearly 10yrs old with no problem! Just after yesterday, my unit completely broke down. The VCR had recorded something from earlier with no problems. I went to watch a tape and the tape wouldn't display on the screen. Then the clock screen went black and unit started making a buzzing noise! So now my VCR/DVD is completely dead and non functional after less than 5 yrs for no reason whatsover! Don't waste your money with this crap! And I'll never purchase another Samsung product again!

1 out of 5 stars Won't last: Not even a good deal on sale   August 1, 2009

Less than a year's worth of light duty on the DVD (my wife plays 20 minutes worth of yoga 5 mornings a week) and the DVD side would not recognize some discs (which worked fine in other players) and the eject tray started acting wackey, requiring very quick and nimble fingers to get a disc out or in. The Samsung telephone customer assistance line had no idea. And then after perhaps 4-5 hours of actual use on the VHS player it ate a tape. Very disappointing.
The price is good and it looks good but there is no lasting value for your money.

1 out of 5 stars Works, but not for long - FRUSTRATING   May 22, 2008
Artemis (Black Diamond, WA)
We bought this unit as a Christmas present for my parents who are in their 80's and who rarely watch DVD movies. We wanted them to have it not only so they could experience the new technology, but more importantly so they could enjoy DVD's of family memories that the rest of us have.

1.) After watching a DVD we couldn't get back to the regular TV screen without unplugging the whole unit, until we randomly discovered that by putting a videotape in then ejecting it, the problem healed itself. THAT's stupid design!
For this reason, my parents wouldn't watch anything unless one of us was visiting.
2.)After less than 10 hours of use, the DVD player "could not read" the disk.
Instead of joy in sharing, we got frustration.
Should we get them another, will they feel confident enough to use it? DON'T get this product. DO read reviews before you purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Great DVD-VHS player   November 16, 2007

I have had the V4600 for two years now. It has worked great. I was hoping to purchase another one from Best Buy, unfortunately they no longer carry them. I am somewhat bewildered by all the poor reviews. I noticed that some were having problems with the movie locking up. My experience has been that there is something on the disk itself, it is not the DVD player. The disk simply needs to be cleaned with Windex and a paper towel. I have recorded many movies with the same three-hour tape for the last two years and the tape still records perfectly. Programming for recording movies at specified times is easy. My only regret is that I am able to only have seven events to be recorded. I have it playing into an 18 year old Quasar TV without any problems. I would postulate that most of the people that are complaining cannot even program the "Time" into any VHS/DVD.

1 out of 5 stars Very Disappointing   March 24, 2007

I needed a DVD/VCR combo. This one looked good and was the right price for me. The DVD player worked well. The VCR was a different story.
The picture quality was terrible. Tapes that played well in a old VCR, looked awful from this one. I recorded something from my TiVo and was barely able to watch it!
After using the DVD player about 10 times over 6 months...the door will no longer open.
So, if you are looking for a disposable piece of equipment...this one is for you!!!
